Despite having the performance right in the middle of the Term 3 Examinations Week, the Catholic High English Department has made it mandatory for all Secondary 3 students to watch the Lord of the Flies Drama Performance at Victoria Theatre on 6 August for this highly charged and enjoyable theatre experience, since the English Language Mastery Review would already be over. We would like to see the Catholic High school spirit in full celebration for the end of the English Language Mastery Review, before they sit for the other subject papers.
The school's English Programme philosophy is that of a full, enriched and experiential approach in developing our students towards excellence in English. Although the English paper is a subject for which mere drills and practices will suffice, to score a Distinction in English requires imagination, maturity of thought and rich life experiences, which most of our students do not have. Therefore, students are unable to engage the examiners in the composition and oral papers. Hence, students are exposed to a range of performances, lectures and excursions to enrich their miserable lives and engage with the English language, as well as literature.
Therefore, we will also be holding a compulsory trip for our Secondary 3 students to a deserted island in the Caribbean Sea at the end of the year, in lieu of their Secondary Three Camp, so that they would experience how the boys felt in the Lord of the Flies. There will not be any teachers around, but we will still be keeping close watch on them via satellite. The teachers will also research on how long our students will turn from civilised gentlemen to savage barbarians, and how many students are killed within the short holiday break. More details will be given on the trip after the Term 3 Mastery Review. We look forward to your understanding and strong support, as we work together to develop our students to their highest potential.
